Having plants at home can instantly make it look more cozy , refreshing and expensive. It’s not about how many plants you have, its about how you style them. Here are some ways you can elevate the look of your home
Common Indoor Planting Mistakes
- Using pots that are too small
- Lining plants in a row
- Overcrowding a space
- Mixing too many pot styles
- Ignoring sunlight requirements
Here are some tips that might help you create a balance while decorating your plants at home:

Choosing the right plants
Different plants have different levels of impact on a room. Large plants draw attention making it the star of the room while small plants are great as a piece of decor like on a coffee table or a bookshelf.
Heightened plants
If you’ve read my blog post on “How to make your home look expensive,” I mentioned that taller plants instantly elevate your room. Additionally, you can place plants of different sizes in different parts of the room.
For example, if you have a large Monstera in the room, place a small pothos on the windowsill or a peace lily on the shelf. If you’ve got a lot of small plants like me, keep them on a plant stand in the corner.
Group different plants together
Instead of having a single small plant, add a few more plants beside it. Plants look better in groups. For example, I have a peace lily on my kitchen shelf corner and beside it, I’ve placed a small pothos in water. Plants of different sizes, leaf shapes and different pots work well together.
Mixing various plants creates a lush, designer-inspired look.

Use stylish pots
Once you bring your plants home from the nursery move them to a more decorative pot, or place them inside one. Use woven baskets or ceramic pots with modern neutral coloured designs. It instantly gives a designer look to your plant.
Tip: Spend majority of your plant budget on the pot and buy an affordable plant. The pot is just as important as the plant itself.

Mixing plants with other decor
Plants look great when they are presented with a candle or a photo frame on the side. They work like a great piece of decor. You can keep them on the book shelf or a coffee table. It can also prevent the area from looking cluttered.
Hanging plants
Plants that grow on vines like pothos or ivy look beautiful in hanging pots or baskets. Plus they do not take up floor space so its a win-win. These are great for small apartments.
Use Plants in Unexpected Places
Most people use plants for the living room, bedroom or balcony. Don’t stop there. Use them to decorate your bathroom, kitchen, study or your entryway. It can make the entire home feel fresher and welcoming. Plants like peace lily and ferns thrive in humid environments and do not need as much sunlight
Match plants to your home
Matching plants to your home is a great way to have an idea on what kind of plants to have in your home.
Modern home: Snake plant, Monstera
Boho home: Creepers, ferns or hanging plants
Minimalist: Simple light coloured pots with one statement plant
Don’t overdo it
One beautifully decorated plant can do a better job of transforming your home than a dozen plants. Start small and keep experimenting with them at different locations. Later you can add more if you like. It is important to avoid crowding and leave some breathing space. All you need to do is choose one “hero” plant and work around it, adding more or less to the group.
Budget-friendly tips while styling your plants
- Reuse items you already have lying around your house. Ceramic bowls, storage containers, baskets, decorative pitchers, wooden boxes. All you need to do is place the nursery post inside the container to give your plant a designer look
- Propagate your existing plants. There are many plants that can progate from cuttings of your existing plants. Use cuttings from pothos and spider plants for best results. Instead of buying another plant, you can grow another plant for free.
- Create Height with household items. Large plants can be quite expensive. As an alternative to large plants, use stacked boxes, wooden stools or coffee tables to give that elevated effect to a small plant.
