Plants That Are Hard to Kill: 6 Nearly Indestructible Houseplants
Once upon a time, I genuinely thought gardening wasn’t my thing. Whenever I would pass by a plant store or a nursery, I would admire the beautiful green leaves and imagine how it would look in my living room. Then I would brush off the idea because I had already killed my fair share of plants. Eventually, I realized that all plants are not the same. Some of them are incredibly forgiving and less demanding than others. They seem to be determined to stay alive even if you forget about them occasionally. I like to call these “plants that are hard to kill”. In this post, I will share the 7 beginner-friendly houseplants that survive with minimal care and are almost indestructible.
When I finally discovered these super-forgiving houseplants, I ended up with a ton of greenery in every room. If you’ve ever thought, “I kill every plant I buy,” I suppose you are probably starting with the wrong ones.
ZZ Plant
I actually kind of forgot this plant existed in my home. If you travel frequently or just get busy with work and household chores, this plant is perfect for you as they can last weeks without being watered. Its glossy leaves remain healthy even when you forget about it.
This plant makes it feel like it wants beginner-gardeners to succees.
Pothos
Pothos or money plant was one of the first plants I had ever owned. At the time, I didn’t know much about gardening and I used to water it everyday. A few yellow leaves later, I realized that watering pothos once a week was enough.
Within a few months, its vines grew long enough to trail beautifully over my shelf. This is a great way to style your money plant. That success gave me a boost of confidence. Eventually, I learnt how to propagate pothos in glass jars.
Spider Plant
The first time my spider plant produced tiny baby plants, I was so confused and proud at the same time. It felt like proof that I was finally doing something right.
Those little “spiderettes” are incredibly easy to propagate, so before long I had more plants without spending any extra money.
It’s one of those plants that quietly rewards you for doing the basics well.
Lucky Bamboo
The lucky bamboo is one of my most recommended plants for beginners. It is one of the top plants that are hard to kill. It has a deep meaning in Feng Shui and nearly impossible to get rid of. Lucky Bamboo is one of the plants that can grow in water and this is the easiest and most beautiful way to grow it.

Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is a succulent with multiple benefits for skin and hair. This was the main reason why I bought this plant in the first place. Initially I made a mistake of watering is very often thinking it would help my plant grow faster. Later I learnt that the plant’s thick leaves are used to store water and only need you to water it every few days.
Sometimes the best plant care can be just giving some space and leave it alone for a while.
Jade Plant
I first discovered jade plant in my local nursery corner. There were dozens of them being sold at a very cheap price. Just what I was looking for as a beginner gardener. At that time, I had already been unsuccessful with my gardening, but I didn’t want to lose hope. So I bought a couple of them home and placed them in a big pot.
I was told to water the plant when it dries out completely and its leaves become thin. This plant stores water in its leaves making it look thick and glossy. Once it loses its thickness is when it needs to be watered. Days passed but the plant didn’t lose its beauty. Although its growth was slow, it didn’t require much attention. Another thing about the Jade plant is it is on of the plants that are known to bring wealth and prosperity according to Feng shui.
